I started this blog because i have experienced so many consumer right violations, through my legal skills and knowledge, I  was able to get remedies and adequate compensation but many Nigerians are  not aware of their consumer rights, some do not know how to enforce them while some citizens lack confidence in the agencies that are charged with the responsibility of enforcing Consumer rights.

We are all consumers. From the food we buy from the market daily to the transactions we do online,we consume everyday and in every part of our lives. Most people are not aware that consumer right is a fundamental right as provided by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that is why we are exposed to hazardous foods, medications and fraudulent advertisement by merchants who wants to sell their products by www.consumerlawng.blogspot.com/8 Consumer rights you need to knowall means because they know that most buyers are ignorant of their rights.

John F Kennedy established four basic consumer rights; The right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose and the right to be heard. In 1985, the United Nations General Assembly added four more rights to protect consumers : the right to satisfaction of basic needs, the right to redress, the right to consumer education and the right to a healthy environment. In Nigeria, we have the Consumer Protection Council Act Cap C25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 which gives general protection to all consumers in Nigeria as well as provides for the establishment of the Consumer Protection Council which is currently headed by Babatunde Irukera.

These are your rights as a consumer:

The right to safety:  Every consumer has a right to be protected against  products, production processes and services that are hazardous to health and life. A supplier should not sell fake, defective and expired products to a buyer.

The right to be informed: Consumers need to be provided with detailed product information to be able to make informed choices. Businesses should always provide complete and truthful statements about their products. The law prohibits misleading or inaccurate advertisements, labelling and packaging.

The Right to Choose: This right enables the consumer the freedom to choose from a variety of products and services at competitive prices with an assurance of satisfactory quality. It protects buyers against the monopolistic tendencies of business men and encourages competition among businesses through legislation.

The Right to be heard: This right ensures that consumers complaints are heard and addressed effectively by the court and other agencies set up by the government to protect consumers. It also ensures that the consumer's interests are represented in the making of government policies that are related to the development of products and services.

Right to Satisfaction of Basic Needs: To have access to basic essential goods and services: adequate food, clothing, shelter, health care, education, public utilities, water and sanitation.

Right to Redress:This right ensures that every individual is entitled to receive a fair settlement on just claims as well as to be compensated for misrepresentation, shoddy goods or unsatisfactory services. Every consumer is entitled to have a defective product repaired, replaced or receive a refund.

Right to Consumer Education: This right ensures that every consumer has access to acquire knowledge and skills needed to make informed choices. It also affords the consumer the opportunity to be aware of basic rights and responsibilities and how to enforce them.

Right to a healthy and Sustainable environment: Everyone is entitled to have a non-threatening  living and working environment that is safe for present and future generations and which will enhance the quality of their lives. Business practices that endanger  human lives as well as pollute the environment should be prohibited.

So the next time any of these rights is violated, make sure you seek legal advice or you report it to the Consumer Protection Council.
